One-to-one tutoring Switch On - Literacy Transition project

In my session, I will describe the Switch-on Reading literacy intervention programme and its implementation in KS3, as part of an Education Endowment Foundation research project evaluated by Durham University. The intervention is a short-term individualized reading programme, delivered over 10 weeks of regular sessions for pupils below level 3 at Key Stage 2. The identified pupils attended 20 minute one-to-one reading sessions with Switch-on trained staff members, such as teaching assistants and librarians.
The purpose of Switch-on is to achieve functional literacy for as many pupils as possible, and so to close the reading achievement gap for vulnerable children working below the age-expected levels. Switch-on reading is based on the principles of Reading Recovery.
I will consider the impact of the programme on 308 pupils and the staff involved, as evaluated by the researchers. Findings showed that the programme was effective with these pupils, to around two months extra improvement in reading-age over three months.
